It is high time the British Monarchy showed real openness and responsibility – to restore public faith and prove Britain’s institutions still stand for fairness.
Most of us, including myself, thought that Prince Charles and Princess Diana divorce and the subsequent events that led up to the Princess’ death had stretched the Royal family to the limit! However, no one was quite ready for events that folded around Prince Andrew and Ms. Virginia over the last 10 years. It was in April of 2015 that during a defamation case against Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, Virginia Giuffre alleged that Epstein forced her to have sex with Prince Andrew when she was 17. The allegation was thrown out and struck from court record at the time.
Fast forward to October 27, 2025 when King Charles was on a visit to Lichfield Cathedral, when a man heckled/shouted at the King “How long have you known about Andrew and Epstein?” The Sky News report of the incident shows how calm the King remained, even though the crowd visibly became agitated. The King walked on in silence, but within a short span of few minutes/hours the video of this event had gone viral on all social media platforms and all major news channels within UK and the rest of the world!
It is expected that some politicians in the very near future will join the monarchy bashing rhetoric, which I personally feel inappropriate, but then the anti-monarchists will soon be making a song and dance out of this!
The royal supporters considered this a rude interruption whilst the King was on his official duties – arguing that the King is not responsible for his brother’s actions! Others, however, wasted no time in venting their anger and began questioning the monarchy itself, as well as wanting equal treatment for ALL.
I understand that at this moment in time the issue will not go away easily and that the longer some stern action is not taken by the Royal Family, the worse it will become. Supporting accountability is not anti-monarchy! As responsible subjects, we aught to maintain due respect to the monarchy while demanding justice.
The controversy goes beyond the royal family. It cuts to the heart of UN Sustainable Development Goal 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, calling for transparent, fair systems that protect everyone equally. In our country justice must be upheld – beyond bloodline or title. SDG 16 calls out for the Royal family to show that it is strong enough to answer and face public scrutiny. https://sdgs.un.org/goals/goal16
It is understood and accepted that the royal family cannot undo past controversies overnight, but trust may be built by showing that its members are subject to the same moral and legal obligations as the rest of us commoners. Full cooperation with the independent investigations would all signal that commitment. I would even go as far as to say that perhaps a public statement by Prince William in the very near future will defuse the situation temporarily until a permanent fixture is in place.
